Liberation’s Fenner Brockway lecture returns with Peter Mertens, Belgian MP. Presented by Brian Leishman MP.
Date: March 18th, 6.30pm, Unison Centre, UNISON, Euston, London*
Peter Mertens is Secretary General of the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB/PDVA), author of several books, including Mutiny! How the World is Tilting.
Fenner Brockway spent his entire life as a passionate campaigner for peace, disarmament, anti-colonialism, anti-racism and socialism. In 1954, he helped found the Movement for Colonial Freedom (which became Liberation in 1970) with the aim of campaigning for the freedom of colonised subjects, together with fellow MP Tony Benn he had grown disillusioned by Parliament’s lack of focus on the injustices perpetrated by Britain’s policies in the colonies.
Liberation sees the Fenner Brockway lecture as a tool to build an independent UK foreign policy free from the vestiges of empire, and to support anti-imperialist struggles worldwide.
